GPON technology

Fiber optic network using GPON technology

At the moment, both individuals and companies are interested in transferring the maximum amount of information on the network and getting hassle-free access. And it is under such conditions that the provider gets the opportunity to compete in the market. And now it is worth talking about GPON technology, what are its advantages and disadvantages, opportunities and solutions.

What is this technology?

Already now, certain types of connection are popular, which can be conditionally divided into wired and wireless. As for GPON, this is the most modern wired technology for connecting to the World Wide Web. The provider uses a passive optical network, which makes it possible to provide access to the Internet at a speed of 1Gbps. The channel is symmetrical, while the graph configuration is similar in description to a tree, where splitters, that is, passive branches, are located on the crown.

This technology provides the ability to receive several communication services over just one cable. And it is the high speed of modern GPON fiber that makes it possible to immediately watch high-definition television channels, search for data on the network from a tablet or smartphone, and so on. The essence of the work lies in the fact that it does not matter at all the number of connected devices, this does not affect the connection speed in any way.

A separate optical cable goes to the apartment, which is connected to a special terminal, which is installed in the subscriber’s apartment. And it is this device that serves to connect all services, that is, this:

  1. Internet.
  2. Phone.
  3. TV.

And Wi-Fi is already integrated in this terminal, so there is no need to install a router. You can connect any device to the network, and wires are not needed.

It is important to note that the installation of the terminal is carried out as close as possible to the hole through which the cable is laid. The latter is quite fragile, so it can be easily damaged, and restoration is an expensive procedure. When choosing a place for installation, you also need to take into account accessibility to the outlet in order to connect the terminal itself. And at the end of the installation, the adjustment is carried out.

What is GPON technology

Bandwidth

As already mentioned, this characteristic reaches the mark of 1 Gb / s. But this does not mean that the subscriber will have just such a speed, the power of the router itself affects the indicator. Most often, the subscriber receives only 500Mbps.

Digital television

Modern technology makes it possible to provide TV services in high quality. But at the same time, this number of channels largely depends on the selected service package, but they are all digital. Even if several users use the network, the picture will be stable.

Telephony

Also, the optical fiber guarantees a clear sound, there will be no extraneous noise or interruptions. This guarantees high quality. In many ways, the functionality still depends on the equipment itself.

Advantages and disadvantages

Of course, this technology has its supporters who talk about the following advantages:

  1. Convenience. Only 1 wire is used for connection, which is not pulled through the whole house.
  2. Speed. Thanks to fiber optics, high speed and stable operation are achieved even with several connected users.
  3. Reliability. The network has additional protection against interference, then the router, radio waves and so on have no effect on GPON. This is a passive network where there is no equipment that can break.
  4. Economic benefit. There is no need to buy a router yourself, since the provider gives access through the device, and it immediately performs the functions of a modem and router. In terms of electricity consumption, this is also quite profitable.
  5. Safety. The protection of transmitted data is guaranteed.

Of course, this is not without its drawbacks:

  1. There is no way to select a terminal. They are not available at retail, and only they are used for connection.
  2. Fragile cable.
  3. Need an outlet near the entry point.
  4. Complicated cable extension process if the situation requires it. And it’s also expensive.
